Starting your puppy's training journey early is the key to building a lifelong bond based on trust and obedience. Here are the five foundational commands every dog owner should teach.

1. Sit

The "sit" command is the easiest to teach and forms the basis for many other behaviors. Hold a treat close to your puppy's nose, move your hand up, and as their head follows the treat, their bottom will lower. Once they sit, say "Sit," give the treat, and offer praise.

2. Come

This command could save your dog's life by keeping them out of trouble. Put a leash on your pup, crouch down to their level, and say "Come" while gently pulling on the collar. Reward them immediately when they reach you.

3. Stay

Teaching self-control. Ask your dog to "Sit." Open the palm of your hand in front of you and say "Stay." Take a few steps back. If they stay, reward them. Gradually increase the number of steps you take before giving the treat.

4. Down

Hold a good-smelling treat in your closed fist. Hold your hand up to your dog's snout. When they sniff it, move your hand to the floor so they follow their head. Then, slide your hand along the ground in front of them to encourage their body to follow their head into a down position.

5. Leave it

Crucial for keeping your dog safe from dangerous items. Place a treat in both hands. Show your pup one closed fist with the treat inside and say "Leave it." Ignore them when they lick, sniff, or paw at it. Once they stop trying, give them the treat from your *other* hand.
